If it's a small tender used to get ashore from your launch or yacht, a small 2.3 hp may be adequate; for a larger dinghy used to travel sedately up and down the river, something a little bigger like a 4 or 6 hp; for a yacht under power, a medium-sized outboard of 8 or 10 hp; for a cruiser that will be used in the river and out at sea, something in the range of 20 to 60 hp; and for a fast powerboat, anything up to 225 hp.
