The importance of a

  • roadworthy,

  • quality,

  • sound trailer

cannot be under estimated for a safe hassle free journey.

Important Points for Your Trailer

Suspension

This is very important to give your boat the ride that it deserves.  Many trailers on the road do not have the correct suspension, causing either suspension failure or a very hard ride.

It must be maintained in good and efficient working order.

The nose weight of the trailer on the towing ball should not be above the permitted limit.

Note - if the nose weight is excessive the trailer will become unstable causing trailer snake and risking an overturn.

Bearings These require regular checking for adjustment and waterproof grease should be used to pack the bearings.
Secondary Coupling This legislation is applicable to trailers manufactured after 1st January 1997.  It’s purpose is to prevent a trailer becoming unattached from the towing vehicle, should the principle connections fail for any reason.

The fitting is a sensible move for older trailers.

Chassis Assuming your trailer is galvanised it will require an occasional hosedown.
If painted regular maintenance is needed to ensure against corrosion.
Tyres Tyres and wheels fitted to the trailer must be suitable to carry the maximum weight of the trailer and it’s load.
Tyre pressures should be as recommended as the manufacturer.
Current legislation on  tyre wear applicable to vehicles is also applicable to trailers.

Lights and Reflectors

If  the trailer is used on the public roads during the hours of darkness it must have

  • Two illuminated red rear marker lights

  • Two red rear brake lights

  • Two amber direction indicator lights

  • Two red rear reflecting triangles

  • Number plate light

  • Rear fog light (not required if trailer <1300 mm width)

  • Front reflectors ( required on trailers >1600mm width)

Towing Tips
  • It is worthwhile carrying a spare wheel and set of bearings – and also check your existing car jack is the correct height to lift your trailer axle from the ground.
  • You are not allowed in the outside lane of a three or more lane motorway
  • You are not allowed to exceed 60mph on the motorway, and 50mph on other roads provided no other limit is in force.
  • At all times the load must be secure so nothing can fall off when you go round a bend or break hard. It is worthwhile stopping after a short while into a journey to check ropes and lashings
