Some Thoughts
The surf board type of
dinghies are not really suited to serious cruising and you sit on them
rather than in them.
The inflatable type of
dinghy take a lot of pumping up, and has poor performance.
The Mirror Weekender is very
light in comparison to it's size and easily car toppable, even when towing a
caravan, and has very good performance and is easy to sail |

Questions
Which Outboard Engines are
most suitable for the Mirror Weekender ?
a Honda 2.3hp - for
more details
What is the difference between
the Weekender and the Race ?
There is a heavier floor - for durability - making
slighty heavier, 46kg rather than 45kg.
Also the fittings and sails are to not the same specs. The sails are
manufactured from a softer cloth, which is more durable than a hard racing sail
cloth. The fittings are as durable and hardwearing, but may not give quite the
same performance as racing spec fittings.
Could I race a Mirror
Weekender ?
Yes, the Mirror Weekender can be measured and receive
a measurement certificate, then it can be raced.
How difficult is it to build
it from a Kit ?
The basic kit includes everything you need to outfit her as a sailboat It would
make a great first boat-building project,
Mirror dinghy
kits are inexpensive, quick and straightforward to build and are very popular
with the recreational maritime enthusiast. see

Comments from a keen Mirror
Cruiser
Although mainly used by youngsters for racing, the Mirror is very good for
cruising (especially single handed) and overnight sleeping using a boom tent and
sleeping boards. My Mirror cost £325 second hand, in good condition. For use on
the open sea I added slab reefing together with twin topping lifts and this is
really important.
You also need one or two hefty anchors. It is a very stable boat with good
freeboard, easily modified and repaired and light enough to right after capsize.
It can be pulled up a beach in an emergency. It can be used with a 2 HP outboard
as auxilliary power in case you are becalmed and for getting in or out of
harbour against the tide. If you are going to do dinghy cruising for real then
contact the Dinghy Cruising Association for more details.
Compared with a Wayfarer it is much lighter and more manageable but not so fast
and cannot sail in quite such heavy weather. However, I have sailed in open sea
in F5 and in sheltered waters in F7.
The surf board type of dinghies are not really suited to serious cruising.
